John Shea joined Tangram as president of the newly created managing general underwriting company in May 2003.
Prior to joining Tangram, John was the Western Regional Manager of Artis, the Royal & SunAlliance's alternative risk venture. John opened the western office of Artis in February of 1999. During that time he developed and managed alternative risk programs that generated in excess of $130,000,000 in annualized premium writings.
Those programs varied from heterogeneous insured and agency sponsored rent-a-captive programs to agency owned captive programs for professional liability in the alternative health care arena.
In addition to the development and management of the Artis alternative risk programs, John opened and then expanded the western region office to include program marketing, policy issuance operations, financial services support and claims management.
Prior to joining Artis/RSA, John spent over twenty years with the Fireman's Fund Insurance Companies. As Vice President of FFIC's Diversified Risk Department, John developed and managed over 25 group captives with premiums in excess of $200,000,000. Those programs were primarily focused on insured owned, multiline, multistate programs and included risks as diverse as agent's and broker's E&O coverage to a Subway sandwich owners' workers compensation program.
John also spent several years as the underwriting manager for several of the FFIC's Commercial Group traditional association-sponsored package programs.
John holds the insurance industry designations of CPCU and AIAF. He is a graduate of the University of California, at Berkeley.
